BIOGRAPHY:

Bill received Christ in 1969 at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, and in 1973 was filled with the Holy Spirit and then immediately called into ministry. Within a couple of years, he discovered that meant pastoral ministry and the ministry of God’s Word.

On March 1, 1979, Calvary Chapel of the Monterey Peninsula officially launched. Bill continued as the senior/lead pastor until he stepped aside in February of 2006. 

Subsequently, Bill began functioning as a so-called “pastor-at-large,” and in 2008 started Poimen Ministries, a ministry to strengthen pastors, so their churches would be likewise strengthened.

Bill is passionate about pastoral ministry. and loves to encourage pastors in what they do. He is also passionate about church health and revitalization which is why he started Poimen Ministries. Bill knows that pastors do not always have peers to whom they can turn when they need to share their hearts.

For this reason, the culture of Poimen Ministries allows for pastors to have a safe place when they connect with one of our team. Confidentiality is a big part of all of that.

BIOGRAPHY:

Paul’s initial stirring toward Christ was during his college years in San Diego. He had met two “unusual men” who would rise at 4:00 am each morning to study their Bibles. Their influence pointed him in the right direction. Shortly after that, Paul attended Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, CA, where he received Christ as he heard Pastor Chuck Smith teach the Bible.

Paul and Lucy have been married for over 46 years and have lived in three different locations, all in California: Corcoran for four years, Hanford for 11 years, and Santa Maria for 31 years. Paul pastored three churches in the Central Valley before being called to Pastor Calvary Chapel of Santa Maria.

In April of 2022, Paul retired from Calvary Chapel of Santa Maria and now serves as part of Poimen Ministries. He also oversees and ministers with Acts 19 Ministries, a ministry Paul started which is focused on helping the church discover the power and ministry of the Holy Spirit.

BIOGRAPHY:

During high school, John was involved in the ‘hippie’ movement, playing in rock-n-roll bands, taking drugs and looking for ultimate meaning. His search for meaning brought only emptiness, as he experimented in many areas: psychedelics, philosophy, metaphysics, and new-age spirituality.

By the grace of God, John discovered a Christian commune near Mendocino, CA. There, he met genuine born-again believers, who opened their ranch and their lives to John as they shared with him about the love of God. He was born-again during this time there.

Having a background in music, John later became Director of Media at Maranatha! Music. Simultaneously, John and Laura were involved with a ministry to married and engaged couples called ‘Enjoying Marriage’ with Pastor Ron & Betty Wiseman. In 1978, John became the founding producer for ‘The Word for Today’ radio program featuring the teaching of Pastor Chuck Smith.

Shortly after, they moved to Sacramento, California and began Calvary Chapel of Sacramento, where John served as senior pastor for 26 years.

After a 10-year ministry which began in Utah in 2006, John and Laura joined Poimen Ministries in 2015.

BIOGRAPHY:

Trip came to know the Lord after wandering through a maze of eastern religions and philosophies during the 1960s. He was baptized in water and the Holy Spirit in 1971 at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. In 1972, along with his wife, Susan, he was called into full-time ministry, and subsequently served in various capacities and ministries in the U.S. and overseas.

In 1978, Trip planted and pastored Joshua Springs Calvary Chapel in Yucca Valley, CA. In 1990, Trip served full-time in the Philippines and southeast Asia. He and Susan established Rainbow Village Ministries in 1991, and Trip was the founding director of Calvary Chapel Training Center in 1995. Trip also served with Calvary Chapel Dumaguete City as an associate pastor and board member.

Today, Trip and Susan live in Jacksonville Beach, FL where Trip is currently involved with discipleship within a local church body; he also travels within the U.S. and overseas to teach and train leaders, primarily using Inductive Bible Study (IBS) and biblical storying. He has a website , Word-Strong, where he posts articles on discipleship, leadership, world missions, and simple devotionals and Bible studies.

Trip has served with Poimen Ministries since 2010. He is passionate about discipleship and training in the church.

BIOGRAPHY:

After graduating from San Diego State University in the 1970s, Phil and Susie moved to Medford, Oregon where he joined the management team of a gourmet food company called Harry and David. As the Lord would have it, a young pastor and wife from the Applegate Christian Fellowship (Jon Courson) moved right across the street from Phil and Susie. In no time at all, the missing piece of their lives was discovered, and Phil and Susie both surrendered their lives to Jesus.

Within four days of salvation, Phil was already leading his first verse by verse Bible Study and seeing people getting saved. 

In 1980, Pastor Jon sent Phil and Susie to start a new work near Rogue River, OR. Again in 1983, Phil was sent by Pastor Jon to the city of Roseburg to start Roseburg Christian Fellowship. The fellowship grew from four couples to a church family of 1,000 people per Sunday.

Phil pastored Roseburg Christian Fellowship for 30 years before retiring and moving to Palm Desert, California where they now serve in various capacities with Poimen Ministries.

BIOGRAPHY:

Pat came to Christ at a Campus Crusade for Christ meeting at Chicago City College. But after a few weeks he slipped back into the flood and haze of the late 60s. In 1971, he hitchhiked to Southern California and surrendered his life totally to Christ at a Christian commune called “Our Father’s Family.”

In 1972 he moved in with the pastor of Christian Chapel of Walnut Valley, CA. In that same year Pat met Joyce, and they were married the following year. They began attending Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, while working, attending church at night, and waiting for God’s plan. In 1975 they moved back to Walnut where Pat began teaching various Bible studies, leading worship — and continuing to wait.

After 5 years at Walnut, Pat was asked to pastor a new small church in Escondido, CA that had lost their pastor. In July 1981, Pat answered the call to pastor Christian Chapel of Escondido, which a few years later became Calvary Chapel of Escondido.

In 2003 Pat's wife, Joyce, wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and after a four-year battle, the Lord took Joyce home in July of 2007. In 2008, Pat stepped down as senior pastor.

Pat soon began working with a mission’s administrative ministry called Shepherd’s Staff Mission Facilitators. It was during this time that Pat met Pamela, and they were married in 2010. Pamela was a Family Practice Physician working with the Navy -- active duty for 20 years followed by civilian service for the Navy and most recently with an Army clinic in Hawaii. She retired in January of 2021, and they moved back to California in May of 2021.

Pat is a founding board member of Poimen Ministries and has served in various capacities over the years, including as transitional senior pastor for two Calvary Chapel churches.

BIOGRAPHY:

Bryan Newberry was called into the ministry at the age of 15 and was serving as a youth pastor by the age of 19. Three years later, he joined the pastoral staff at Horizon Christian Fellowship. Pastor Bryan started Calvary Chapel San Diego in the South Bay area in September of 1985 at the age of 24 and continued for the next 32 years with his wife Cheryl and their four children: Renee, Nathan, Charles, and Tracy. He handed off the church to a new senior pastor in 2018.

Bryan is the teacher on "Words of Encouragement," which features his messages on the whole Bible. It can be accessed through radio, television, and current and archived messages.

Bryan has a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, Religion, and Biblical Studies, a minor in Youth Ministries, and a continuing study in Apologetics.

Bryan has served with Poimen Ministries for six years.

BIOGRAPHY:

Chris was raised as a Roman Catholic in Northern New Jersey, where he lived with his parents. At the age of 22, Chris gave his heart to Jesus Christ. The first person that Chris led to Christ was his future wife, Marion — whom he married only one month later. Chris and Marion have been married for over 43 years and have four children and seven grandchildren.

Chris’ spiritual journey began in Oregon where he was discipled under Pastor Jon Courson at Applegate Christian Fellowship for five years before relocating back to New Jersey. There he joined Pastor Lloyd Pulley at Calvary Chapel of Old Bridge and spent six years serving in many capacities; in youth ministry, home fellowships and on the church board of directors.

In 1992, the Lord called Chris and Marion to move to Toms River, New Jersey where there was no Calvary Chapel church. After teaching Bible studies for several years, the Lord directed the small Bible study group to start a church. Thus, Cornerstone Calvary Chapel was born, settling in Howell, New Jersey in 2001.

A pastor-teacher as well as an evangelist at heart, Chris has been involved in many national and international outreach efforts. He was a first responder at 9/11 in NYC, he served in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, as well as many other disaster relief efforts. Chris has overseen missions in India, Ireland, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Haiti, Brazil, Peru and El Salvador.

In 2020, Pastor Chris stepped aside at Cornerstone and began serving with Poimen Ministries.

BIOGRAPHY:

Terry grew up in the Los Angeles area where he attended church and received Christ as a child. In 1975, he began attending the well-known Saturday night concerts at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa where he rededicated his life to the Lord. In 1982, Terry married Kathy and they began attending Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa where he began playing drums in a band called "The Mirrors," which ministered on many missions’ trips.

In 1985, Terry answered God's call to full-time pastoral ministry, and in 1993 the McNabbs moved to Portland, Oregon to pastor Calvary Chapel Portland. Terry served in that capacity for over 23 years. Currently, he is the senior pastor of Verbatim Church in Albany, just south of Portland. 

Terry has been serving with Poimen Ministries for the last 10 years in helping to strengthen pastors in their calling.

BIOGRAPHY:

Frank was born and raised in Chicago, IL, into a Roman Catholic, Sicilian-American home. In the spring of 1973, when Frank was 16, his parents moved the entire family of eight to Southern California. Frank gave his heart to Jesus in December of 1975 in a Baptist Church in Anaheim, CA. The first Bible study Frank ever attended was at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa on a Thursday morning with Pastor Romaine (Pastor Chuck Smith’s assistant pastor). That’s when Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa became his home church.  

Frank married his first wife, Tammy, at the age of 19 in 1976 and they had three children together. They were married for 30 years when Tammy died suddenly in June of 2006. Frank is now remarried to his current wife, Gerri. Together, they have 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and live on a small homestead farm with sheep, goats, chickens, a greenhouse and a beautiful garden.

Frank has served or been involved in just about every aspect of church ministry at one time or another. He was a worship leader, a deacon, an elder, and an assistant pastor. In 1986, he entered the ministry full-time as the Senior Pastor of the Calvary Chapel in Fairfield, CA, where he served for 6 years. Over the years he also started several churches in CA which are still growing today. 

In December of 1992, Frank and his family moved to Austria, where they served as missionaries in Europe for six years. Frank became the pastor and overseer of “The Castle,” the Calvary Chapel Conference Center in the Austrian Alps, which is owned by CCCM. During their six years in Europe, Frank founded the first CC Bible College in Europe and initiated the planting of churches in various towns in and around Western Europe. In June of 1998, Frank and his family left the mission field for New Jersey to assume the Senior Pastor role at Calvary Chapel in Vineland, NJ, a role he filled for 26 years. He recently transitioned the church to his son and joined the Poimen Ministry Team.

Frank has been teaching through the Bible for more than 45 years and intends to continue teaching the Word while supporting his son in the Vineland Church as part of the pastoral team. While his passion is to study and teach the Word of God, he also enjoys traveling and leading Christian tours to biblical sights such as Israel, Rome and Greece. He’s even led Christian Heritage tours to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and England. He is a founding member of the Vineland Police Chaplains, is a Chaplain with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and is a Chaplain with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. He has been deployed to many high-profile crisis events through the years, ever since 9-11.

BIOGRAPHY:

Mark accepted Christ at age 15 at a Brethren Evangelistic outdoor camp at Bassenfell in the Lake District of England. He has been involved in ministry ever since then.

Mark originally comes from the Leeds /Bradford area of England where he served for many years in the Worship & Teaching ministry of Church on the Way, a Calvary Chapel affiliate.  

In 1998, he left his job as a Legal Liability Specialist with a major UK insurer and moved with his family into full time ministry. He and his family moved to Millstatt, Austria in 1998, to be a part of the Calvary Chapel Bible College, Europe. He served as a pastor on staff responsible for worship, teaching in the Bible College and was responsible for the administration of the facility. He joined CCBCE when it was located in Austria and was part of the team responsible for the moving the Bible college from Austria to Hungary in 2002.

In 2002, Mark served as a Pastor on staff at Vajta, Hungary with responsibilities overseeing worship, teaching in the Bible school and various administrative, including overseeing the internship program and the grounds and maintenance department. For eight years, Mark made frequent trips to the Pacific Rim, with a passion to encourage the saints and helping to raise a ministry school there.

In 2009, the Walshes moved to New Zealand where they started Calvary Chapel Bible Institute New Zealand and The Psalm 2:8 Trust. Since 2009, they have been ministering with CCBI across the Pacific Rim and have helped facilitate the planting of three churches in this time: Calvary Hawkes Bay, Hastings NZ, Shoreline Calvary, Mount Maunganui, NZ and Calvary Chapel Nasinu, Suva, Fiji.

Mark has been part of the Poimen Ministries team for two years. Currently, the Walshes live in West Yorkshire in the UK and are active in strengthening pastors in various parts of Western Europe.

BIOGRAPHY:

Shaun and Sheila have been serving in ministry together for over 27 years with 24 of those at Calvary Chapel Cheyenne. They both came to Christ in high school -- Shaun through a friend and a Gideon’s Bible and Sheila through friends who invited her to church. Shaun and Sheila have been married for over 30 wonderful years and have two married adult children and two grandchildren.

Shaun has served as a youth pastor, assistant pastor, and senior pastor -- a role he filled for 18 years at Calvary Chapel Cheyenne. His role as senior pastor began following the unexpected departure of the founding pastor of Calvary Chapel Cheyenne, at which time he had to learn on his own how to do almost everything in ministry. Since then, God has placed a desire on Shaun’s heart to help pastors avoid having to learn lessons of ministry the hard way. Sheila, a gifted prayer warrior, has years of experience supporting her husband's ministry, raising a family, homeschooling, leading various ministries, working at the church, and serving over 20 years as an officer in the Wyoming Air National Guard. 

Shaun and Sheila are excited to be working with Poimen Ministries as the next step in fulfilling God’s call for them to pastor pastors and their wives.

BIOGRAPHY:

Steve’s journey with the Lord began in junior high at Calvary Chapel Arroyo Grande, where he first gave his life to Christ. Not long after, at the age of 17, he sensed God’s call to ministry. Though that calling was clear, the path wasn’t immediate—Steve spent several years in the business world before stepping into full-time vocational ministry at 29. 

Those early years instilled in him a deep appreciation for the everyday challenges people face, which would later influence his pastoral heart. After serving as an associate pastor, Steve was part of planting Harvest Church in Arroyo Grande, California, where he served as lead pastor for 23 years. Over that time, he simply sought to teach God’s Word, care for people, and serve the church as faithfully as he could. 

Today, Steve serves with Poimen Ministries, where his heart is to come alongside pastors—encouraging, strengthening, and reminding them that they’re not alone. Having walked through both the joys and the weight of ministry, Steve is passionate about helping leaders stay healthy, faithful, and anchored in their calling for the long haul. 

At the center of it all is Steve’s family. Steve married the love of his life, Jolene, in 1990. They have four adult children, all married and serving Jesus, and are now the joyful grandparents of 14 grandchildren (and counting). For Steve, ministry has never just been about the church—it’s always been about a life rooted in Christ, lived out both in the home and in service to others.

BIOGRAPHY:

Al and Becky have been married for over 50 years. They both came to Christ on the same night, November 24, 1975 during the Monday Night Bible Study with Greg Laurie at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. Al then began a serious study of the Bible at CCCM's School of Ministry. Not long after graduating there, the Lord spoke to pastor Chuck Smith, who suggested to Al and Becky about the possibility of moving to Prescott, AZ to plant a new church there. In June of 1980, the first “Calvary Chapel Prescott” Bible Study was held. 

In 2008, Al stepped away as the senior pastor. He and Becky continued to serve, coming alongside various churches and ministries.

Al began with Poimen Ministries as a transitional pastor, helping Calvary Chapel of Wichita, KS as they looked for a new permanent pastor. Later, they served for four and a half months in Arcata, CA. Overall, Al has served as a transitional pastor with five churches, including CC Flagstaff, CC Tri-State (Cincinnati), Calvary Fellowship in Juneau (Alaska), and CC Lake Arrowhead in CA.

BIOGRAPHY:

Pastor Gillett Doggett has gone home to be with the Lord. He is and has been much loved and respected by many, for many years. 

Gillett and Victoria were exposed to Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in 1971. Soon after that, they began attending an affiliated church, the former Calvary Chapel Riverside (now called Harvest Christian Fellowship) in Riverside, CA. From that fellowship, Gillett began leading a home study, and by 1979, the group became a church, Calvary Chapel Rialto, CA. Pastor/Evangelist Greg Laurie was the sending pastor.

In 1987 the Lord began opening a new door for Gillett and Victoria in the small community of North Fork, CA. In 1990, they made the move to Northern California to meet with a tiny congregation of 12 people, including children. That fellowship became Calvary Chapel North Fork, near Yosemite National Park. 

In July of 2007 Gillett stepped aside from the senior pastorate in North Fork and joined the staff of Poimen Ministries, and was a founding board member of the ministry. 

Gillett was always kind and patient, soft spoken, and ever learning. He will be missed. 

He was (and is) a great man of God. We know this for sure: Gillett’s entrance into heaven is precious in the sight of God (Psalm 116:15).
